For years now Star Wars fans have all asked what happens next? What happens now the extended universe is no more, what happens when Lucasfilm announced that episode nine would end the Skywalker (cough Palpatine) saga? Well now we know.
This brings us to today and Project Luminous, or to give its new name The High Republic. |
This new era will begin with the novel Light of the Jedi by regular Star Wars writer Charles Soule. The book will introduce us to “a different kind of Jedi, one that patrols the frontiers, a sort of Texas Ranger,” and begin with a catastrophic event known as “The Great Disaster”. Available on August 25, that’s our late summer reading sorted!
After Light of the Jedi, the “High Republic” release schedule is as follows
The new Star Wars enemy of the Jedi has been announced as the Nihil, who are described in the promotional video as “space Vikings”. Artist Iain McCaig, who designed the look of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace is the lead designer on this project and so the characters are sure to look great. So, what does this mean for the films? With no film currently announced, this could be the start of the Marvelisation of Star Wars, is this just phase one? Based on what has happened since Disney took ownership of Star Wars, you would imagine that any future film would tie into this era. This leads to some interesting initial thoughts, such as will we see Yoda at his peak, baby Chewie anyone? The Sith’s “Rule of Two” has been established so will this be the real starting point of the end of the Jedi? Anything seems possible right now. You have to stop and pinch yourself sometimes when you realise that in just the last six months Batuu and Galaxy’s Edge opened in Florida with perhaps the greatest theme park ride ever where you can experience the sights, sounds and tastes of Star Wars. We have discovered how the Skywalker Saga ended. The Mandalorian brought the original trilogy vibe back and The Clone Wars has just returned… we can leave Resistance to one side. Now we have some details on The High Republic, this fan who at times has felt very unsure of why he couldn’t fully support the decision and directions taken in the sequel series couldn’t be more excited. It is time for a new Star Wars adventure, and I feel certain that it is something that we can all support. |
