Is Obi Wan the subject of the next trilogy?

We are less than 60 hours from the UK release of The Last Jedi, Episode VIII of the Star Wars trilogy, and the holonets are rife with the story that the subject of the next trilogy will be Obi Wan Kenobi.
Now, we are quick to point out that these stories are currently unconfirmed and originate from an unknown source. But the story appears to suggest that filming will begin in 2019 in the UK - namely at Pinewood Studios. We know that there will be a new trilogy, Rian Johnson has already disclosed this, but the subject was not mentioned. And a standalone Kenobi movie has been rumoured for a while now. Could this just be gossip or are the two individual stories now moving towards convergence? Kenobi has already featured in the current trilogy, at least his voice did when Rey first discovers Luke's lost Lightsabre, so perhaps LucasFilm hasn't yet finished with the character. |
So, if the rumour is true, what could we be looking at from such a trilogy? Which part of the Jedi Master's past would be covered? Could the focus be when Kenobi was in hiding as a hermit whilst secretly guarding the young Luke Skywalker? Might we have a bigger insight into his past as a padawan under the tutelage of Qui Gon? Could it even feature some of his time as a Jedi Knight and mentor to a young Anakin?
And who would play the signature role? Alec Guinness and Ewan MacGregor have both made the character 'theirs', albeit in different times and under different situations. Ewan has also said that he would be interested in reprising the role, and given his age now he could well fit the mould for an older, hermit Old Ben on Tattooine.
I guess only time will tell, we will be watching the story to see where it goes and will keep you informed when we know more.
